WW - Viscount French ' of Ypres' inspecting trenches at the Lord Derby Group System training centre in the UK. Field Marshal John Denton Pinkstone French, 1st Earl of Ypres aka Sir John French (1852-1925) also served as a midshipman briefly in the Royal Navy, before becoming a cavalry officer. His career was nearly terminated after being named in the divorce of another officer whilst in India in the early 1890s. He was allegedly known as a womaniser throughout his life.
