If the covering ofthe connecting cord becomes worn through, there isdanger of fire or a shock. Care with Hot Water Bags.—Nurses cannot be toooften cautioned about getting hot water bags too hotor leaving them near unconscious or delirious patientsor those whose vitality is low. Despite warnings, acci-dents of this sort are all too common. Each nurse shouldresolve at the beginning of her career that no patientshall ever be burned by her action or neglect. Sheshould bear in mind also that the presence of any damp- EXTERNAL APPLICATIONS 155 ness near a hot water bag renders it much more liableto burn. Dreadful burns have occurred where a hotwater bag was placed outside a damp flannel, even thoughthe heat was not great enough to have produced the effectotherwise. The observation of a few simple rules will help inavoiding these distressing occurrences. Do not fill a hot water bag from the faucet
