The steeple seen onthe left is that of the Presbyterian church; the one on the extremeright the old courthouse ; the academy is next to it; and the squaresteeple is that of the Episcopal denomination. The first religioussociety organized was the Presbyterian ; they held their meetings, asfar back as 1811, in the old courthouse. In 1819, they erected theirfirst church, a few rods southwest of where the present stone churchnow stands. There are here 1 Baptist, 1 Methodist, 1 Episcopal, 1Roman Catholic, and 1 Presbyterian church, besides a society ofUnitarians. The proximity of the town to the Canada line made it an import-ant place during the late war, and the scene of several minor militaryoperations.
