Red Blood cells inside the heart: false-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of red & white blood cells on the endocardium, the lining of the heart. The whole vascular system is lined by a single layer of endothelial cells (endothelium), the plate-like features in this image. This delicate membrane is supported & protected by a layer of elastic connective tissue, which absorbs the relatively violent movements of the heart during the cardiac cycle. The red cells appear as biconcave discs, whilst the white cells are spherical with tiny surface projections. Magnification: x950 at 6x7cm size.
