Organized as the First Dragoons and sent to the southwest to watch the Pawnees and Comanchesat the time it began its existence, the regiment had its name clianged to the First United States Regular Cavalry on July 27, 1801, whenMcClellan assumed command of the Eastern army. This photograph was taken at Brandy Station in February, 1864. The regimentat tliis time was attached to the Reserve Brigade under General Wesley Merritt. The troopers took part in the first battle of Bull Run,were at the siege of Yorktown, fought at Gaines Mill and Beverly Ford, served under Merritt on the right at Gettysburg, and did theirduty at Yello
