The loadedwagons approach the hoists on the quay level, and the emptywagons leave by an elevated road about 20 feet above the of the hoists are operated by a single direct-acting ramunder the centre of the platform. A defect of this arrangementis the difficulty of getting at the cylinder for purposes of repairs,as it is wholly below water. This difficulty has no doubt beennoted, and in the newer hoists the lifting rams are placedupright, one on each side of the cradle. The speed of loading is almost exactly the same as atSwansea.
