Recently a remarkable change has taken place in theecclesiastical arrangements of the English Free Church of Scotland has erected its banner in Eng-land, and is now rallying its forces. The character of thisnew Presbyterian church in England, is the same with thatof the Free Church. The general principles of its doc-trines, order of worship and government, may be found inthe article on American Presbyterians. Under the care of the Presbyterian Synod of England,besides a Theological College, there are seven Presby-teries, viz.: Berwick-on-Tweed, Birmingham, Cumberland,Lancashire, London, Newcastle-on-Tyne, and Northumber-land. In these Presbyteries there are 73 clergymen, 78churches, and 2 foreign missionaries. The Synod also. AMERICAN PRESBYTERIANS. Ill attends to various schemes of benevolence, among whichare prominent, foreign and home missions, and ministerialeducation. Considering the comparatively short time inwhich this progress has been made, it appears to be highlyencouraging. AMERICAN PRESBYTERIANS. The word Presbyterian is often used in a wide sense ascharacterizing a large portion of the Protestant embraces all those denominations which are opposed toprelacy. In prelatical church government and usages, alarge number of sects are included.
