The saw is formed ofhardened steel plates, which are riveted together in double series for the entire length. The rivets are sufficientlyloose to form joints. Each plate or linkis shaped on one side to form a pair ofsaw teeth, one tooth cutting in onedirection and one in the other. Theplates are a little thicker on the cuttingedge than at the back, so that the saw,as it is sharpened, is always set so as toclear its cut. A cross handle at each end of the saw fits into a ringfor use. The handles are withdrawn from their rings to render thesaw portable. 870. STUMP-PULLING MACHINE. The pulling mechanism issupported by a tripod, to the upper end of which is secured a chain carrying a bar or plate pro-vided with a bearing in whichslides a notched bar.
