Anatomy and physiology : designed for academies and families . the neck, where the duct turns downward to enter the transversevein at (8.) 9, The descending aorta. 10, The arch of the aorta. 11, The carotidarteries. 12, The jugular veins. 13, The subclavian artery. 14, The subclavianvein. 15, The descending vena cava. 16, The azagosvein. 17, 17, The spinal col-umn. 18, The diaphragm. The colon is divided into three parts ; the ascending, thetransverse, and the descending. The ascending colon passesupwards from the right iliac fossa, to the under surface ofthe liver. It then bends inwards, and crosses the upper partof the abdomen, below ihe liver and stomach, to the left side, How is the colon divided ? Describe the ascending colon. The transverse. Here it makes a peculiar curve upon itself, whichis called sigmoid flexure. How many coats have the large intestines ?12* 138 ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY. The longitudinal fibres of the muscular coat are collected intothree bands. These bands are nearly one half shorter thanthe intestine, and give it a sacculated appearance, which ischaracteristic of the coecum and colon. The liver, a gland appended to the alimentary canal,is the largest organ in the system, and weighs about fourpounds. It is situated in the right side, below the diaphragm, and is composed of several lobes.
