T is the purpose in the followingpages to describe the equipmentthat has been developed particu-larly to meet the requirements ofone-man safety car operation. Inthe design of this equipmentsafety, lightness and automaticoperation were the three objectives. Since the re-duction of the car crew from two men to one wouldnaturally reduce the schedule speed if the equipmentwas not changed, it was essential to produce a carwhose automatic features would be so completethat its progress over the line would not be delayedby one-man operation. From the railways stand-point it was also desirable to relieve the operatorfrom physical and mental strain as far as has been done by making the operating equip-ment so convenient and efficient that the operatorsmovements have been reduced to a minimum, withthe result that the added conductors duties have notbeen burdensome to the operator. The economy ofusing a light-weight car has already been so fully discussed else
