The dome wasvery large, and had a flanged joint nearthecenter of its height; the throttle wasof the old slide pattern, encased in a boxthat was located on top of an arch pipethat went out each side of dome to thechests; there was a dry pipe above thethrottle. The fire door was below and behindthe axle, and the fireman stood in a pit,the bottom of which was on a level withbottom of ash pan, the tank deck beingabout breast high. Name, John Stevens; No. 28; triedApril 17, 1849. The engine weighed about 50,000pounds. Both the driving and truckwheels were made of wrought iron, andthe spaces between the spokes filled withwood.
