Kofukuji Temple 1, Nagasaki, Japan

Kofukuji Temple was founded in 1620. It's first abbot was Zen Master Yinguan (Ingen in Japanese) who was responsible for introducing the Obaku school of Zen Buddhism into Japan. Kofukuji is Japan's oldest Obaku Zen temple. It is also known locally as 'The Red Temple,' owing to the colour of its Sanmon gate. Chinese temples are known in Japan as 'todera.'
