Long-billed Dowitcher Limnodromus scolopaceus (Say) Status: The Long-billed Dowitcher is a common transient around wetlands, especially Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Management Area and Quivira National Wildlife Refuge. It is a casual summer vis- itant and has been recorded in early winter. Period of Occurrence: The earliest recorded date in spring migra- tion is 27 February, but most birds start to arrive 26 March and depart northward by 28 May. Some birds are seen in summer, with a 19 June record and other records from 10 July. The main fall migration starts around 24 July and lasts through 10 October, with a late date of 23 November. Habits and Habitat: This long-billed shorebird is one of the more common and attractive shorebirds. The Long-billed Dowitcher can be found in the central Kansas marshes, feeding in the mudflats and along the muddy shoreline. They sometimes congregate in flocks of several hundred birds, probing the mud for invertebrates. It is not uncommon to see them up to their bellies in water as they feed. This shorebird winters farther north than most shorebirds that pass through our area; some birds move no farther south than the Gulf.
