Cambodia: 'Uncovering the Ruins of Angkor'. Engraving by Louis Delaporte (11 January 1842 - 3 May 1925) from 'Voyage d'Exploration en Indo-Chine, 1866-1868', Garnier Mission, c. 1873. Angkor Wat is a temple complex located in northwest Cambodia, serving as a national symbol and sacred site. It was built in the early 12th century for King Suryavarman II (r. 1113-1150), within the Khmer Empire's imperial capital Yasodharapura. It was originally a Hindu site, dedicated to Vishnu, but was later converted to a Buddhist temple. It is now a recognised UNESCO World Heritage Site.
