FIFTH ARMY : CASSINO AREA - Pte. Doug Mason of 92 Hectorage Road, Tonbridge, Kent volunteered to go down from Castle Hill, Cassino, to pick up wounded men of the Royal West Kents. In accordance with the Geneva Convention, he was unarmed. On the way down he met six German paratroopers, all armed with grenades, pistols and Spandaus. Realising his only chance was to bluff, he violently ordered the Germans to follow him back to the Castle.
