Bauxite, aluminium ore. Macrophotograph of bauxite, the mineral that is the principal ore of aluminium. It is not a true mineral, instead consisting of a mixture of various aluminium oxides. It is mined primarily in Australia, Russia, Brazil and some areas around the Caribbean Sea. This sample, from New Queensland, Australia, is displaying a pisolitic appearance. A pisolite is a sphere on the surface of a mineral with a diameter greater than 2 millimetres.
