He served at Angel Island, Cali-fornia, and at various other posts in other departmentsfrom 1871 to 1890. He was promoted captain January31, 1S74. MEDICAL INSPECTOR A. S. OBERLY, (retired). Medical Inspector A. S. Oberlv was born nearEaston, Pennsylvania, on April 7, 1S37, and graduatedin medicine at Yale College in i8f>o. At the outbreakof the Civil War he was engaged in the practice of medi-cine at New Haven, Connecticut, and after refusing sev-eral flattering offers to join the volunteer army as surgeon,he answered a call of the Secretary 1 if the Navy to appearbefore an examining board; after which he was appointedan assistant surgeon, and assigned to the receiving-ship ()hio, at Boston, and later was commissioned an assist-ant surgeon July 30, 1861. His next duty was on the frigate Sabine, off theSouth Carolina coast, and while en route for an attack onPort Royal, the rescuing of about four hundred marinesfrom the foundering steamer Governor detained theship until too late for action. In January, [862, he was transferred to the gun-boat Kineo, and participated with Flag-officer Farragut inhis attacks and passage of
