An old engraving of a steam crane on rails at work at the docks on the River Tees at Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire, England, UK the 1800s. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. The port of Middlesbrough can be traced back to 1830, when an extension of the Stockton and Darlington Railway was opened to deliver coal from the Durham coalfields to the riverside. It was so successful that work began on a new facility in 1839 and this was Middlesbrough Dock which opened in 1842 enabling the export of steel as shown here with this elevated, mobile crane lifting up a girder.
