Grant, Eighteenth President of the UnitedStates, was born of good English ancestry, at Point Pleasant,Clermont County, Ohio, April 27th, 1822. His Grant, fought at the battle of Lexington, and was pro-moted to the rank of captain. Ulysses attended school ethe Academy at Ripley, Ohio, after which he entered theMilitary Academy at West Point, where he graduated May15th, 1839, being then scarcely eighteen years of age. Heranked as a fair, general scholar, and excelled in mathematics. He took part in the Mexican War, distinguishing himselffor coolness and bravery, and was promoted to the rank ofcaptain in 1853.
