Electric interior lighting in the early 13th century Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta (Church of St Mary of the Assumption) in Piazza Roma projects the shadow of a wooden crucifix on to the cross vault over the small apse or scarsella at the east end of the nave. The impact of the image of Christ in agony, his head tilted to his right, is heightened by the jagged edges of his outline against the diffuse grey background of the ceiling. The apse dates from the first phase of the church's construction, which began soon after Monteriggioni was founded as a hilltop citadel in 1213 by the city of Siena. The church was built in late Romanesque style with a plain golden travertine facade and a barrel-vaulted nave.
