Pope Leo X (Giovanni Lorenzo de' Medici) was pope from 1513 to his death in 1521. He gave the renowned Italian painter Raphael many commissions and made him the custodian of classical antiquities of Rome and the vicinity. Raphael is credited as the architect of the High Renaissance.
