It is first mentioned in Genesis as aborder town of the Canaanites (b. c. 1920). It wasone of the chief cities of the Philistines, and is re-markable for its continuous existence for over 3,800years. Gaza is situated on the main road betweenSyria and the valley of the IMile. Its commandingposition and strong fortifications rendered it import-ant in a military as well as commercial sense. Itsname (=the strong) was well elucidated in its siege byAlexander the Great, which lasted five months, andin which he was wounded. In the conquest of Joshuathe territory of Gaza is mentioned as one he was notable to subdue. Samson carried away its gates, butafterwards perished under the ruins of its vasttemple. At subsequent periods Gaza was occupied. R by Chaldeans, Persians, and Egyptians. The Jewishking, Alexander Jannseus, captured it about 96 b. qIn A. D. 634 it came nnder Moslem rule. The modern town stands partly on an oblong hilland partly on the low ground, and contains a popula-tion of about 15,000 inhabitants. The climate ofthis place is nearly tropical, but it has deep wells ofexcellent water. The ruins of the old city cover a large hill, whichis about three miles fiom the sea. Among the ruinsare those of the fortress that so long withstood Alex-ander the Great.
