After two years, with 234 students and 17 teachers, the school had grown large enough to have its own permanent building.

Nearby in 1859 he founded the Bethany Sunday School (shown here with a sign on an arch at the entrance saying ‘Union Mission’). It became the largest in the country at the time. After just two years, with 234 students and 17 teachers, the school had grown large enough to have its own permanent building. In 1865 Wanamaker moved the Bethany Sunday School to 22nd and Brainbridge Street, expanding it into the Bethany Presbyterian Church.
