. World's Columbian Catholic Congresses and educational exhibit ... embracing official proceedings of all the Chicago Catholic Congresses of 1893 .... which make life pleasant and sweet. In the midst of national prosperity there is anincreasing dearth of men and women who are exalted by knowledge and virtue, whostand forth conspicuously as the intellectual and moral leaders whose speech andexample enlarge and refine the life of the multitude. The feverish and absorbingpursuit of money, while it has established a great and growing inequality of posses-sion, seems to make the rich and the poor equal in hardness, in narrowness in dis-content and unintelligence. Our schools, which have helped to make us shrewd, andkeen-witted, have failed to give us faith in high ideals or a sense for beauty or a loveof culture. Our material progress is a marvel to all men; our efforts to develop a nation ofnobler, purer, more enlightened human beings than have ever existed elsewhere havebeen disappointing. This, however, is our mission, if we have a mission, and it is en-couraging to know that the best among us feel this to be so. Hence, when they turn.
