False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the microfilariae (larval worms) of an unidentified nematode roundworm. Numerous nematodes cause disease in humans, living as parasites of the intestines, blood, lymph, subcutaneous & connective tissues. Examples include Enterobius vermicularis (Pinworm), Ascaris lumbricoides (Roundworm), Toxocara canis (Dog ascaris, the cause of visceral larva migrans) and Onchocerca volvulus (River blindness).
