Transcription: Boonville MO Jan 8 AD 1862 Miss N R[?] Flickner[?] Dear Cousin I received your kind dispach last night and was really pleased to hear from you I am well and have never been otherwise Since I enlisted I am almost alone tonight last night the Com. was Called out and marched to the ferry and I have not heard from it Since it was reported that the rebels had driven back a detachment of 1st Iowa Cavalry which have been Sent over on a Scouting expedition therefore you See it is impossible to tell you how John is he was well the last account I had of him which was last night about 10 oclock circumstances would not admit of my going or else I would not have been here not Fred and John are also gone and I hope they will blot the enemy out whereeve[r] they may find him we have not done much yet but I hope we will Soon do Something that will make up for the last time there is Some talk about the Secesh attacking this place but if I think it it is all a flying report but if they do I think we will Welcome some of them with bloody hands to a hospitals grave or a traitors grave whichever they may be pleased to term it they have tried to their Sorrow to take this place twice already and I think a third failure will Satisfy them Boonville is a very nice little place it is Situated on the South Bank of the Missouri and is a Stronghold for the Federal troops Well might the rebels be jealous of it and if they do take it it will be when the James 5th is reduced to a Spread I received a letter from Mary yesterday they auer all well as were all of the relations in Iowa Samuel is now at St Louis mo get letters from him acasionally the 2nd is Stationed in the City to guard the prisoners take by Gens Pope and Davis I believe I have written all that I can think of excuse my bad writings rendered more rediculous by the boys who were left who were are trying a backwoods cotillion in the room near me Answer this if
