He waselected to the State Senate in 1887 and 1888, and wasl)resident of that body both years. Mr. Boardmansinfluence upon the railroad legislation of Massachusettshas probably been as great and far-reaching as that ofany other man. He was married in 1862 to MissGeorgia M. Hinman, of Boston. He was educated in the Fitch-burg, Mass., public schools, and in i860 was appointedlibrarian of the Fitchburg Public Library, at the sametime beginning thestudy of law. Hegave so good satis-faction as assistantlibrarian that in 1861he was elected aschief librarian overhis former superiorand competitor, re-ceiving a unanimousre-election in 1862and again in 1863,when he resigned toaccept a position inthe Rollstone Bankof Fitchburg.
