75-year-old Um Shadi repairs a bicycle tyre in the Balata refugee camp east of Nablus. Um Shadi has been working repairing and maintaining bicycle tyres in the Balata camp for nearly 35 years. The Balata refugee camp is afflicted by a high level of unemployment, with the level of poverty and food insecurity being among the highest in the West Bank camps. Balata is the largest camp in the West Bank and is extremely overcrowded and has poor infrastructure. The camp was established in 1950 by the UN for the Palestinian refugees fleeing from the Jaffa area
