At a given signal Forts Sumter, Johnson and other works turnedtheir fire upon the evacuated forts, to prevent the Federals from rush-ing in and extinguishing the fuses, and though this fire answeredthe object in one sense it failed in another. From April to September Wagner had been stormed and assaultedand pounded until almost every grain of sand had soaked a drop ofblood, but here it was at last in Federal hands. Ten thousandinfantry, thirty cannon and mortars in battery, backed by a fleet ofiron-clads, had finally driven seven hundred and twenty men out ofa sand heap, and Gilmore was half a mile nearer Charleston. Federal history called it a great victory, and the masses shoutedglory without counting the cost or consulting the facts. To-daythe sea is pouring across the sand bar in three or four differentchannels, and a few months more may see white-capped waves roll-ing over the spot where whole pages of a nations history werewritten with bayonets dipped in frills fatir.
