Not a greatamount could be obtained, but it Avas something, and helped out thecoal. The steamers Newport and Fearless were off Pitt Point, about 40miles east of Point Barrow. They each had a crew of 40 men, andwhen first closed in had barely enough provisions to last through themonth of January. Their situation in this respect was so desperatethat rigid order and economy had to be enforced immediately, and bygreat labor and sacrifices, and by Mr. Browers excellent assistance,enough provisions were had from time to time to cany them along,though
