There is no way of helping the poor so beneficial as dissem-inating such knowledge as will enable them to obtain an honestliving. The dispensing of alms (however munificent,) has adegrading effect upon the recipient, and the relief is but tempo-rary, whereas to impart the means of self help, is to elevatethe mind, and its effects are lasting. In the editorial appeal of the Fanciers Journal all of us canwell appreciate the exclamation, we jidst have cash, withwhich to carry us alon<r, in any business we undertake. I haveoften wondered why it is that people who are n ally fond of read-ing and studying the poultry—and other—publications from whichthey derive instruction, pleasure and profit, should so often, sopersistently, and so recklessly neglect to pay the printer. ButI think in your case you have been too easy, and too indifferentwith your patrons, and have left the pay-day too
