Japan: 'Eleven-faced Goddess of Mercy'. Hanging scroll painting from the Heian period (794-1185), Nara National Museum, Nara, 12th century. Kannon/Kwannon is the Japanese name for Guanyin, the Bodhisattva of compassion and mercy.
