Afterthe War of 1812, and particularly after the discovery of abun-dant supplies of coal, Pennsylvania took the lead in the varietyand value of its manufactured products, Philadelphia for a. The value of the productsat that time was ten million dollars. In 1909, the value of themanufactured products of the city was $750,000,000, and of thestate $2,650,000,000. Twenty-three different industries eachproduced goods valued at more than $25,000,000. The five ofgreatest importance were steel works and rolling mills; foundriesand machine shops; blast furnaces; leather; and woolens,worsteds, and other manu-factures of wool. Iron and Steel. In1756, Pennsylvania wasspoken of as the mostadvanced of all the Ameri-can colonies in regard toits iron works. Steel wasfirst made about 1750,
