Upon receipt ofhis commission he was ordered overseas,sailing in August, 1917. Upon arrival inFrance, Lieutenant Betts was sent to aFrench school for further military instruc-tion, upon the completion of whichcourse, he was assigned to the 1 8th In-fantry Machine Gun Company. Afterserving as battalion adjutant for sometime he was transferred to the MachineGun Company of the 1 6th Infantry, withwhich outfit he met instant death while incharge of the company.
