The Mausoleum was built to house the body of King Mohammed V of Morocco, the grandfather of the present king, Mohammed Vl. In between came Hassan II. During Mohammed V's lifetime, Morccan kings had an almost godlike status which may explain the splendour of this mausoleum. Nowadays, Moroccan kings have the status of "respected person", a slight demotion.
