The walkway down to the Mer de Glace Grotto has plaques on the wall showing the retreat of the glacier since 1890


In Victorian times around 1890 when the Montenvers train line was built anyone taking the train from Chamonix to the Mer de Glace could almost walk out straight onto the ice. Now you have to take a 5 minute gondola ride down and then walk a further 430 steps down a walkway to a grotto in the ice. Is this global warming or just the natural cycle of the climate
