Hans Holbein the Younger (1497-1543) was an outstanding artist of German Renaissance. He spent early half of life in Basel, where he was friends with Erasmus, whose Praise of Folly he illustrated and of whom he painted many portraits. He became painter to Henry VIII in 1535.
