Fossilised wood. Rock containing fossilised wood structures from Sigillaria plants from the Carboniferous Period (354-290 million years ago). This was a time when swamp plants dominated the land and, when they died, they formed large beds of coal (a form of carbon). This led to the name of this geological period: the Carboniferous. Fossils form by a more delicate process than coal formation, allowing fine structural details to be preserved. This fossil is from the Netherlands.
