The Public Trustees building in Napier from 1922 to a design by Hyland and Phillips of Hastings, is one of the few that survived the 1931 earthquake


At on 3 February 1931 a massive earthquake followed by building fires virtually flattened the city of Napier. As the rebuild began planners and architects took the opportunity to redesign the roads and rebuild the city in an art deco style that was popular at the time,
