Man in white coat sweeping the floor to the side of a fruit and vegetable market stall in the Mercado Central, Santiago, Chile

Santiago's Central Market (Mercado Central) is a cast-iron structure opened in 1872. The metal-work was made in England. It was declared a National Monument in 1984 and is primarily a fish and vegetable retail market, with around 30 sea-food restaurants. There are also craft and souvenir stalls. Entertainers, including balloon-selling clowns and guitarists, are also to be seen.
