Detail view of iron ore calcining kiln, part of the old or south kilns, Rosedale, North Yorkshire, England, UK

In the 19th century iron ore was mined in Rosedale valley, the ore purified in kilns and transported by the North Eastern Railway for smelting elsewhere. Calcining or roasting dries the ore and drives off carbon dioxide, leaving a metal oxide that is then used for smelting. Doing this near to the mines reduced the volume of material to be transported to the smelters located elsewhere.
