Gasperiniconfirms this last statement: The changes in the scene of Venuscompelled Tedesco to begin again the study of her part, and the dif-ficulties of intonation had tired her voice. The first performance of Tannhiiuser in its original form in theUnited States was at the Stadt Theatre, New York, April 4, , Graff; Tannhauser, Pickaneser; Wolfram, Lehmann;Walther, Lotti; Biterolf, Urchs; Heinrich, Bolten; Reinmar, Brandt;Elisabeth, Mrs. Siedenburg; Venus, Mrs. Pickaneser. Carl Berg-mann conducted. The New York Evening Post said that the part ofTannhauser was beyond the abilities of Mr. Pickaneser: The ladysingers have but little to do in the opera, and did that littlerespectably.
