Horsemen perform horse acrobatics at the annual Litang Horse Racing Festival, or Yaji, meaning "Festival of Summer Pleasures". Occurring simultaneously across Eastern Tibet, now Western Sichuan, the Yaji are throwback of the great clan gatherings, where the nomadic tribes would meet annually to settle disputes over land, leadership and who had the fastest horse- or in some cases yak. The horsemen of the former kingdom of Kham still meet and compete in the same events, and although prestige is high on the takings, usually no blood is lost.
