This pass and the southwestMissouri road way are said to have the meritof being at all times unobstructed by was to aid in the construction of this rail-road that Congress recently donated publiclands to the state of Missouri. Some fortymiles of the road are already built and in ope-ration. RAILROAD RECORD. 69. The above cut represents a recently invent-ed Freight Car, consisting of two, or more,cylinders, with the rim of a car-wheel attach-ed to each end, by means of which it ismaintained upon the rails. The load iscontained in these cylinders, in which, runningfrom end to end, is a division, or center piece,to prevent abrasion or moving of the cylinders are kept in place by meansof a framework of wood resting upon journals,rivited in the center of the head of eachcylinder; this frame work has also a narrowplatform at each side, for the purpose ofaffording a pasfage way from car to car, witha railing upon the inner side to prevent per-sons from falling upon the cylinders when inmotion. The size of the cylinder is about fivefeet in diameter, and of a length to suit thegauge of the road upon which they may beused. Cylinders of this size contain about 2tons 12 cut. of coal esch.
