1921 printed image of the Black Hole of Calcutta (now Kolkata) enclosure (within railings). The below ground dungeon measuring  ×  ⁠metres (14 × 18 ⁠⁠feet), was used to hold British prisoners of war for three days by the troops of Siraj ud-Daulah, the Nawab of Bengal. It is situated in Fort William, Calcutta , India. 123 of 146 prisoners of war imprisoned in terribly cramped conditions died there. In memory of the dead, the British erected a 15-metre-high obelisk; it now is in the graveyard of (Anglican) St. John's Church, Calcutta
