Sea defences on beach at high tide Cudmore Grove Country Park , Mersea Island, Essex.

Sea defenses on beach at Mersea Island, Essex. To combat the erosion of the Cudmore Grove Country Park - cliffs at East Mersea, a polder scheme has been installed on the mud flats, using lines of posts. At high tide, sediment in the water settles within the 'enclosures'. After a few years the mud flats will have silt deposited allowing salt marsh vegetation to colonise it naturally. This salt marsh should be high enough to prevent high tides reaching the bottom of the cliffs, whilst reducing the destructive power of the waves.
