The tenants ofthe escutcheon stand on a scroll, on which is the follow-ing motto: Deo Favente,which alludes to the eye in the arms, meant for the eyeof Providence. Over the crest, in a scroll, this motto: Virtus Sola Invicta. After thoroughly discussing the matter theyagreed, that Barton had done exceedingly well,but they believed the device entirely too elab-orate and complex; and also that he had failed.
