False-colour transmission electron micrograph of a Golgi apparatus (yellow & green curved body). The Golgi apparatus is a component of the endomembrane system of the cell cytoplasm and acts as a distribution and modification centre for the proteins and lipids produced by the endoplasmic reticulum. The Golgi apparatus consists of a stack of saucer-shaped, paired membranes. Materials passing through the membrane stack may undergo chemical modifications before budding off as small, spherical vesicles known as secretory vesicles. These are then liberated at the cell surface by a process known as exocytosis. Mag: x16,000 at 6x7cm, x8,000 at 35mm size.
