The instrument panel of a gasoline/electric Chevrolet Volt automobile at an "AltCar" (alternative car) exhibit in Santa Monica, CA. Note the "charge menu" screen at right. The Volt is the first vehicle application of the GM's new E-Flex platform and in spite of the presence of an internal combustion engine, GM does not call this vehicle a hybrid but an electric vehicle with range extending capability. The engine starts and stops automatically as needed to charge the battery.
