Andrew Gosland, John Quimby, Baptiste Premeau, Moses Hardwick and othersalso imparted vigor into the early history of the district, and prepared the way for themore material men of might, who with the pacific outfit of modern equipments, ere longattacked the pine clad buttresses of the Menominee, and whilst the air became filled withthe music of the woodmans axe and the song of flying chips, the monarchs of the forestbowed their tufted heads, and through the long avenues thus opened, the light ofknowledge penetrated; a gathering flood of commercial sunshine invaded the valleys andascended the slopes, later to reveal the mysteries and unspeakable riches of Michigansirondom. The most important factors at this time, in 1856, and in this direction, were thelumbering companies organized and the mills operated by the Fowlers and Hosmers, theWells Bros., Jesse Spalding and H. H. Porter, the two last named incorporating their. A Log Jam on the Paint River. venture in 1872 under the name of the Menominee River Lumber Co. The same year,the great Ludington combination also erected their first mill at Mission Point atMarinette. Nelson Ludington of Chicago, Harrison Ludington, afterwards Governor ofWisconsin, and Daniel Wells of Milwaukee, and subsequently, in 1858, Isaac Stephenson,being the chief promoters. In 1863, this corporation, or rather certain members of it,reorganized, Mr. Van Schaick securing an interest.
